Medeco High Security Lock Company was formed when a gentleman who worked for a lock manufacturer in Connecticut called Yale and Towne, left his job and set up his own tool & die business in Salem , Virginia .   These humble beginnings took place in the mid 1950’s with only a 2,000 square feet facility and 10 employees.  Roy C. Spain, a partner in the enterprise called Mechanical Development Company received a patent (No. 3,499,303) for his new lock named Medeco derived from the first two letters of the company name.  This new lock had a unique locking principle design using skewed angled key cuts with elevating and rotating pin tumblers creating literally millions of different key combinations which, at the time, was new to the lock industry.  It also featured mechanisms that made it resistant to lock picking.    

The biggest shot of free publicity came when Associated Press took a picture of The American Embassy in Tehran , Iran showing Iranians climbing the fence because they could not open a Medeco padlock which was on the gate.  The caption in the article read “The Lock that Shakes the World”.   From that point on Medeco High Security Locks became world known and recognized for its High Security features in a lock.  

Today Medeco has expanded to a facility of 132,000 square feet with over 400 employees in Salem , Virginia and has a second facility in Ontario , Canada .  

Medeco is now part of the ASSA ABLOY group and has become one of the strongest and most trusted locks in the lock industry.
